• Escape writer’s block with Oblique Strategies

A few months ago Phutureprimitive hosted a Google+ Hangout session that I happened to attend. In it he was asked a wide variety of questions ranging from questions about gear to questions about crazy tour memories. One thing that stood out to me was his answer to a question that was essentially asking him how he deals with writer’s block. In his answer he mentioned a set of cards that Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt produced in the 1970s intended as guides to shaking up the mind in the process of producing works of art – Oblique Strategies.

In order to explain Oblique Strategies as best as I can, I’ll cite an information source that is the basis for every single thing that I know – Wikipedia:
“Each card contains a phrase or cryptic remark which can be used to break a deadlock or dilemma situation. Some are specific to music composition; others are more general. Examples include:
    Use an old idea.
State the problem in words as clearly as possible.
Only one element of each kind.
What would your closest friend do?
What to increase? What to reduce?
    Are there sections? Consider transitions.”

So, I don’t actually have the cards and I can’t really suggest a place for you to find (though I’m sure an internet search will help you out), but I did find a website that houses a ton of them – CLICK HERE and hopefully these can help you get out of a deadlock or dilemma situation!
